Why I can’t see House, my Nutritionist visit and the Baby-Sitters Club

As much as I’d like a visit to Dr. House, as I truly believe him to be the only person who could get to the bottom of what is wrong with me, there is one major reason I would not be eligible to see him — aside  from the fact that he is not real and there doesn’t seem to be a real diagnostician specialty.

My problem is only in one area.
If you’re going to see House, it is fine if your problem begins with one main symptom. However, a requirement of remaining his patient is that two or more of the following must happen IN ADDITION to your main cause of complaint:

 - Liver failure
 - Kidney failure
 - Heart failure
 - Other failure,  believed to be a result of a Sexually Transmitted Disease
 - Vomiting blood (preferably over the side of the bed)
 - Dark, itchy rash of which there is no relief aside from tearing your own skin off
 - Family member in attendance with something to hide
 - Suspicious turkey sandwich in home refrigerator

and, thanks to Danielle, who pointed out an important one I forgot:

- One of of the above symptoms MUST occur while you are in the MRI while 2 doctors discuss something completely unrelated to your case and then cause them to run in, look at you, and then stare at each other

And of course, the above must occur only once you already under his care.

And while I have possibly have a bit of a medical mystery, I have none of the required additional problems from this list. I will have none of the problems from this list. I don’t even like turkey sandwiches.

House

The Nutritionist
I am so happy I went to see her. She was very helpful — and specializes in GI problems. When I used to go to my old doctor with concerns about whether I was getting adequate nutrition, he would say “You’re fine, all you need is a multivitamin.” When I went to the nutritionist today, she said “You CANNOT go on eating like this! And you’d need at least 3 multivitamins to even come close to catching up.” So glad I did this. So we are on a little trial and error program. Even though I can’t eat most vegetables, I am going to start with some that might not bother me as much as the others. I will continue to eat one vegetable for 3 days, keep a chart of how I am feeling, and then move on to the next for 3 days, and so on through the list. I am also going to try applesauce (no added sugar) and canned fruit (in its own juice) as well as Mandarin oranges.

She and my doctor prescribed an enzyme that I will take before every meal. She also recommended trying Lactaid before I eat dairy, because even though dairy doesn’t bother me, it might be worth a try.

She also had me speak to the psychologist there. I liked this because she specializes in GI disorders. We talked about how my problems have affected my life and she told me about two programs she does and how she thinks they will be beneficial to me. They sound wonderful, but unfortunately she does not take my insurance. She said that I could see her and then submit a claim to my insurance and they might pay half, but this is something I would have to really think about because I am not in the ideal financial situation right now, working at a big bank and not having much stability at this time.

She did give me the information of the psychologist who created one of the programs she uses — he is with the UNC Center for Functional GI & Motility Disorders — and told me I can check his website for a provider that might take my insurance. I checked. None do. It is true that these problems have taken a life of their own and get in the way of my daily life constantly. I would love to get a better handle on this and manage this all better. She did tell me that writing is a great way to help!

I thought Claudia and Stacey were REALLY cool. I admired their sense of style, particularly Claudia who wore outfits not unlike this:

high ponytail on left side of head with hot pink and orange scrunchies, to match the socks of course

Now girls, tell me this isn’t the coolest outfit you have ever heard about. The thing was, we really did think it was at the time. Although I must admit I wanted to be like Stacey more. I even thought her diabetes was cool. Claudia was dumb. She  couldn’t spell a single word. It’s one thing not to be bright in school, not everyone is, but now when I look back on Claudia’s writing and spelling it is clear her problem went way beyond that. She couldn’t spell “how” correctly twice in the same paragraph. I remember laughing when she wrote “Who are you” when she obviously meant “how are you” in a letter to one of the other baby-sitters, but in the same letter she spelled it correctly. She couldn’t handle basic first grade words when she was supposed to be in eighth grade. Not good. Stacey, on the other hand, had REALLY cool handwriting. I also loved Mary Anne’s handwriting, and based my own script on hers.

I also joined the official fan club and still use the stationary they gave me. My roommate thought it was hilarious the first time I put up a note to the mailman on our building’s front door using it.

I also was enthralled with the secret passage in Dawn and Mary Anne’s house. I thought that was insanely cool and on many occassions would tap the walls in my apartment trying to find my own secret passageway. To a barn. In Queens.

Maybe I wasn’t much brighter than Claudia after all.

Getting back into eksusize mode

When my brother was in second grade, he had to keep a journal for school. It was one of those composition books. I had the same assignment when I was in second grade (my composition blook was neon orange) and it is hilarious to compare our writing.

My journal entries were legible, well written and some were quite long. My brother’s, in the other hand, were an adorable mess of handwriting and spelling and mush. One of our favorite entries in his journal (writing from memory, since it is at my mom’s apartment and I don’t have access to it at the moment) is one where he wrote that one of his favorite activities is to “eksusize with my sister.”

This is hilarious on so many levels. First, eksusize! How sweet is this spelling! Next, when my brother was in second grade, I was in fourth. When did we ever exercise together??! And if we did, WHAT DID WE DO! I’d love to know, since he clearly enjoyed it so much. Other levels of hilarity include his handwriting, the messiness of his writing, the adorableness of his words and attempts, and of course the comparison to my writing at the same age. Now he is much smarter than I am. Back then, not so much.

So whenever we talk about exercising with each other, we now say eksusize. Both written and verbally. Say it out loud: EK-SU-SIZE. Fun times.

Also, when we talk about the gym, we pronounce it gime. Look up the Simpson’s clip on YouTube and you’ll understand. It provides endless entertainment for me. Every now and then during out conversation about the gym, I will say “Gime? What’s a gime? OHHHHH, a gime!” I never get sick of saying gime, even though my brother does.

As you know, I was out of commission this past weekend with a cold. Not only was it my first cold in forever, but it was so much worse than I remember any cold being. My entire face was burning and stinging with pain, particularly my gums. I felt so awful and it is good timing that it was bad over the weekend because there is no way I would have been able to go to work the way I was. And I’ve never missed work because of a cold before. This one really knocked me out.

I stayed in bed and ate chocolate pudding and PinkBerry. Yum. On Sunday, I felt a little more like real food, and had a flashback to when I was very young and would go to my neighbor’s apartment when I had to stay home from school sick and my mother had to work. I loved going there because they had sugar cereals, which I was never allowed to have in my own home except on my birthday and Hanukkah. Keeping in tradition, I was craving a delicious cereal for my sickbead. There is one that is fairly new and I have always wanted to try, and decided this would be the perfect time – Chocolate Lucky Charms. You heard me. The part of Lucky Charms that tastes bad (to kids) NOW TASTES GREAT! I ate a few delicious bowls and then threw the rest away since eating an entire box would not be good! I’m glad I got to try it and it was so worth it.

By Monday I was fine to go to work. I wanted to take things easy and make sure this cold doesn’t come back, but I also wanted to get my body moving a little, so I did a workout a la Heather. She hurt her hamstring and to take it easy, has been doing 60 minutes of recumbent bike with no resistance. I thought that sounded like the most boring thing I ever heard, but also the perfect exercise to do while recovering from a cold — especially since I am in the middle of reading American Wife and cannot put it down, so I figured it would make the time pass easily.

After 40 minutes my legs were just bored, so I went on the treadmill and walked for 10 and then it was almost time for the new episode of House so I considered myself finished. Pretty good considering I was bedridden the day before!

Today I am feeling even better and want to go back to spin. I was going almost every day (once I went twice in a day!) before Seattle, and then during my trip I had 4 days of no eksusize at all. When I got back I went to spin once but didn’t feel great there and the next day I came down with the cold from hell. So it has been awhile since I really had a good workout. Tonight I will go to spin but I will take it easy. I will start it off slow to get an idea of how I am feeling, and I won’t be pushing myself too hard. I want to slowly get back into it without risking getting sick again.

Tomorrow I have my appointment with the nutritionist at my GI doctor’s office. I am looking forward to talking to her about my problems and my concerns and hear what she thinks — and hopefully learn more about what I can eat. I have been craving oatmeal lately. I love the texture and the taste and the smell and everything about it, but it is one of the foods that makes me feel at my absolute worst. I want to tell the nutritionist this and see if she has any suggestions for incorporating it back into my life.

Important note to sick people: As much as I love Zicam Nasal Gel, I have to strongly urge you NOT to use it while you have a cold. It stings. Intensely. And worse, the sting lasts for HOURS. Not fun times. But I strongly encourage using it if you feel the start of a cold coming on, or your cold is newly finished.

Hard to believe, but true. I have Zicam to thank for this. Because I was busy in Seattle when the very first signs of my cold started to appear, and it just wasn’t on my mind, I didn’t use Zicam nearly as much as I normally would have… hence, my first cold in a very long time.

This means:

Once again canceling our SoulCycle reservations. I was really looking forward to these for the second time! I already canceled once before. I promise one day I will try it out!

No exercising. I feel like crap. There is no way I’m going to force my body to work when it is BEGGING me for rest. The weekend will be spent in bed.

Canceling fun weekend plans including my already postponed dinner with two of my good friends and seeing the boy’s adorable niece and nephew.

Possibly not making the Maple Glazed Pumpkin French Toast as I had planned. I’ll see how up to it I am.

I hate being sick! I’m just trying to get through the day so I can rest. I can’t wait to lie down in bed with my book (The Reader — really good so far) and spend the weekend there. 

In other news, the nutritionist my doctor works with doesn’t take my insurance, so I made an appointment with another one who is close to my apartment for next Wednesday. I will keep you updated on this.

Puppying, Eating, Elliot Bay-ing, Upcoming SoulCycling and a Diagnosis

I haven’t posted in awhile because I went to Seattle and then had to catch up like crazy when I got back. Some highlights from the Seattle trip:

Friday: Seeing Santana for the second time ever and falling completely in love. How adorable is she in her pajamas!

Saturday: We went to the always yummy Mae’s Phinney Ridge Cafe. My brother got CROISSANT FRENCH TOAST. Wow. Dinner at The Pink Door where my mom had the best scallops I ever tasted and my brother, Mallory and I shared a delicious Fudge Brownie Sundae with Pomegranate Sauce – the perfect mixture of sweet and tart! Then we went to see The Lion King, a traveling Broadway show type thing. The costumes were incredible, but I fell asleep pretty soon into it due to a big meal + jetlag.

When we got back to the apartment, Mallory heated up a homemade cookie she made! She had the cookie dough chopped up in the freezer and stuck my cookie in the toaster oven. The entire inside was chocolate chips so it was warm goo – I LOVED it! Perfect bedtime treat.

Sunday: Breakfast at Portage Bay! It was a tough decision, but I ultimately decided on the Seasonal Compote French Toast - Graham Cracker crusted challah french toast, seasonal fruit compote, vanilla custard, whipped cream. It came with a trip to the toppings bar where I got some delicious syrup! It was absolutely incredible and I can’t wait to go back and try different types of french toast there.

For dinner we were so excited about Red Mill Burgers! These burgers are truly special. We got there and stood on the very long line when an employee came out with a sign that said “Closed” and informed us that they had run out of meat! Uhh how does a popular burger place, known for its MEAT, run out of meat! Ridiculous! So we left and went to Kidd Valley. My cheeseburger was still delicious and I got to have yummy sweet potato fries – my favorite!

We also picked up some ice cream for dessert – notably Edy’s Slow Churned Girl Scout Tagalong ice cream! I was SO excited to try this one since I didn’t even know they made a Tagalong version (I have already had the Samoa and Thin Mint). Unfortunately, I passed out on the couch at 8:30 and the ice cream remained unopened.

Monday: Walked around Pike’s Place where I sampled incredible Marionberry Preserves, but forgot to actually purchase them. I tasted lots of other delicious goods as well. Then for the highlight – THE ELLIOT BAY BOOK COMPANY! This place is my crack. Every time I come to Seattle, I need to go there and buy books.

The employees who work there review the books so you can find little notecards with the reviews right alongside the books. The enticing, phenomenal reviews really make me want the book! This is great since I might not have chosen these books on my own. I used to work at a book company but since I left I have been a little out of touch with new titles. I left with 4 books but really wanted more. Luckily, Mallory had one of the ones I wanted to she lent it to me. There was another one that I really wanted because of the review, but I had a strong feeling I already had that one in my apartment (I will have to look!) If not, I’ll order it online. I have a ridiculous amount of books in my apartment (and my mom’s) because I took EVERYTHING when I worked at the book company.

Elliot Bay also has an extensive bargain section, where I grabbed a book I had never heard of (Dear Zoe), read it in its entirety on the plane ride back and fell in love. Another thing about Elliot Bay is the atmosphere. You walk in to this old wooden store and the floor creaks as you wander. There are little nooks and staircases and shelves and shelves and shelves of books. It is almost magical. I definitely feel different when I am in there. Just going in there is an experience on its own.

I bought American Wife (Curtis Sittenfeld), Sarah’s Key (Tatiana de Rosnay), Remember Me (Sohpie Kinsella – a guilty pleasure) and the from the bargain table Dear Zoe (Philip Beard). The book I almost got but instead Mallory lent me is The Reader (Bernhard Schlink), which I am reading right now. The book I wanted to buy but think I might already have at home is What Was Lost (Catherine O’Flynn). If I don’t have it after all I’ll order myself a copy because it got such a great review at the store.

After we left, we went into Fireworks which is a very fun store! They have the most random things — very cute gifts and other randomness — and I always laugh when I’m there. It’s hard to describe but check out the website. I got the boy a little present there. Whenever we go to Elliot Bay we also stop in Rocky Mountain Chocolate. I had a delicious sample of some chocolate thing with an apple, which made it juicy and tasty! I took the piece with the smallest apple because of my stomach. I bought a Valentine’s Day box of chocolates (half price!) to bring to my work meeting on Wednesday. It was delicious!

And I finally had the Edy’s Slow Churned Girl Scout Tagalong ice cream – it was SO GOOD!

This weekend the boy and I are finally going to go to SoulCycle to try it out! Even though I can spin for free at my gym, when I am at his place we use the gym in his building, and we both miss spinning. If he likes it, this will be a great option for him to drop in on a spin class every now and then. I can’t wait to try it out! The class we wanted was already filled which makes me wonder if it is a better class. Maybe one day we will try to register earlier in the week, but for now I am very excited to see how our class is this Saturday. Now that I am comfortable with my spin shoes, snapping them into the pedals and positioning my bike, I am curious to see how it is at other places. I’ll be sure to give a little review next week.

Updates: 

I like the Annie’s Mac and Cheese singles very much! Stomach seems to be okay so I’ll have them for lunch every now and then.

I basically have a diagnosis on my condition. I’m not ready to post this on here (and I don’t know if I ever will be) but please feel free to leave a comment and let me know if you’d like me to tell you privately. Unfortunately, there is no definite treatment, and I am on the same course of trying different treatments and hoping one works. I left a message for a nutritionist in my doctor’s office so hopefully I can meet her and learn more about my food options.

Runners, Cyclists, Etc: Please read Caitlin’s post about Road IDs and why you should wear one. Once I start running outside (if I am able to!) I plan on always wearing one of these for my safety.

Heart Attack Fries

These Double Heart Attack Fries come from Abock.com. Hope he doesn’t mind my submission – I did fully credit him though! He seems to have a good sense of humor from his blog, so hopefully I don’t get web-yelled at! Well, the internets are for sharing.  When the boy showed me this picture, I said, “Omg I need this.” Look at that gooey cheese melted over the fries. And the grilled onions. Mmmm.

Yeah, it looks gross. I know. But also good.

This weekend I’m going to the Seattles to visit my brother, his girlfriend and their pup. We have some great things planned, including some delicious meals. This menu to Portage Bay Cafe looks AMAZING for breakfast – look at their options! To name a few – Chai and Soy Milk Oatmeal, Organic Prawn Omelette (with goat cheese!), Organic Apple & Whole Wheat Pancakes,  Buckwheat and Rice Flour Pancakes for the gluten intolerant, Graham Cracker Crusted Challah French Toast (with vanilla custard!), and so so so many more mouth-watering options. The pancakes and french toast all include a trip to the toppings bar. Wow. As you know, I am a BIG TIME breakfast fan. I want it all.

And no trip to Seattle (at least this section of it) is complete without a visit at Red Mill Burgers which is just a few blocks from my brother’s apartment! They have some secret sauce that is just addicting and delicious. I also wanted to check out the place my brother goes every week for Thai Tuesday — hopefully we have time to go everywhere we want to.

Anyway, as you know I have been trying to listen to my tummy. This means generally cutting out all carbs. But lunch can get expensive when living on protein and today when I was in the Amish Market in Tribeca I spotted Annie’s Organic Mac and Cheese in SINGLE SERVINGS! Just add water! 240 calories! The Easy Mac of my college days has come back to me slightly healthier. For only $5.49 a box (includes 5 meals) I couldn’t pass it up. Especially with my love of mac and cheese. Yes, I know my stomach can’t always tolerate carbs. But I thought to myself, “How can I know if I don’t try?”

If my tummy says no way, then I will listen and give the box away. But at least I tried and can honestly rule it out. Another visit to the doctor tomorrow will hopefully give me some more insight. We’ll see. . .
